Volunteering

We currently have over 90 volunteers working on a number of projects, both onsite in Stafford, at Lichfield library and remotely. Our volunteers play an important role in supporting us to care for and share our collections. All roles are open to anyone aged 18 plus with the right to volunteer in the UK (16+ for welcome host).

Available Roles

Welcome Host – to help offer a warm welcome to all visitors to the Staffordshire History Centre in Stafford. Our volunteers greet visitors, signpost our offers and invigilate our exhibitions. This is great opportunity to meet new people and learn more about local history, full training will be given. Vacancies for Friday and Saturday.  Age 16+

History Access Point Volunteer – Based at St Mary’s Hub in Lichfield to greet visitors, signpost our offers and support local researchers to access resources. Tuesdays or Thursdays 10-12

Conservation Volunteering:

Preservation and packaging – based at the Staffordshire History Centre on Mondays. The role involves learning how to make bespoke boxes for oversize items that will not fit into archive standard size packaging to improve the long-term preservation of our collection.

QB Re-packaging – based at Unit QB, Beaconside in Stafford on Thursdays. The role involves learning how to make bespoke boxes for oversize items that will not fit into archive standard size packaging to improve the long-term preservation of our collection.  Age 18+ only.

Collections Volunteering:                                                                                         

All resources are provided including on site laptops.  Sessions are held weekly in the volunteers room at the Staffordshire History Centre.

Victoria County History – Wednesday 10-12:  Researching and recording relevant information about Staffordshire which will form part of the national Victoria County History publications.

Digitisation and scanning – Thursday 1-3: To record and digitise various historical slides and photographs of Staffordshire.

Staffordshire Yeomanry– Friday 10-12: Cataloguing the Staffordshire Yeomanry Museum Archive.

Hatherton Correspondence– Tuesday am group is currently full     Staffordshire Workhouses– Tuesday pm and Thursday am groups are currently full. Staffordshire Placenames Wednesday pm group is currently full.

Casual Volunteering Options:

Events Volunteer – to assist when required at family activities.  Mostly school holidays and occasional Saturdays.  Would suit students and those who cannot commit to a weekly session. 16+ in the summer holidays.

Walking Tour Volunteer – to help marshall during walking tours.  Day and times vary.

Learning Volunteer – To assist during educational visits to the History Centre.  We will carry out a DBS check for this role.

Gardening Volunteer – To help maintain the outside spaces at the History Centre.  All resources and PPE are provided.
