- Administrative History: The Coal Industry Nationalisation Act, 1946, provided for the complete nationalisation of the coal industry. On 12 July 1946, the National Coal Board (NCB) was established and on the vesting date, 1 January 1947, coal-mines were taken into public ownership. On 1 January 1987, the NCB became the British Coal Corporation. This corporation was wound up in 1997. The Coal Industry Act, 1994, established the Coal Authority, which became operational on 31 October 1994, and took over certain functions of the British Coal Corporation. The pre-nationalisation records of colliery companies and coal industry organisations are also defined as Public Records and many of these records have been deposited at Staffordshire Record Office. These pre-vesting records are arranged by individual colliery.
- Format: Public records
- Description: National Coal Board
In the section of National Coal Board records there are divisional and area records. There is a small series of divisional files but the coverage is limited. There a few financial and production records for the North Staffordshire area but the strength of this sub-section lies in the series of property records, which include a good series of colliery photographs (1940s-1980s) and plans (c1901-1992). The Cannock Chase sub-section consists of Property and Public Relations records only; however, they include a strong series of colliery photographs (1950s-1980s) and plans (1950s-1990s). The South Staffordshire and Shropshire sub-section consists of a limited number of property records, including a small series of photographs of collieries (1960s-1970s).
Opencast Executive
There is a strong section of records for the Opencast Executive, consisting of applications for opencast coal sites in Staffordshire (1980s-1990s).
Pre-vesting records of individual colliery companies
The survival of records differs greatly between individual colliery companies but a good range of records can be found overall, namely: Corporate, Shareholding, Financial, Production, Sales, Staff, Property, Public Relations and Photographs.
Pre-vesting records of colliery owners organisations
Pre-vesting records of colliery owners organisations are represented well in this collection. The records are arranged alphabetically by the name of the organisation. Some minutes, financial records and correspondence have survived for most of the organisations. On occasion, subscription books and maintenance fund records have also survived, for example, for South Staffordshire and East Worcestershire Mines Rescue Association.
Pre-vesting records of joint owners and workers organisations
A limited number of records have survived for each of the ten workers organisations listed in this collection. These records tend to be minutes and financial records.
Pre-vesting records of workers organisations
This is a very small section of records relating to South Staffordshire Association of Colliery Managers (account book, 1936-1937) and the National Association of Colliery Managers (minute books, 1905-1943).
