- Description: The Cheshire Joint Sanatorium Committee was supported by Cheshire County Council, Birkenhead County Borough, Chester City and Stockport, Stoke on Trent and Wallasey Borough Councils. The site (240 aces) at Loggerheads on the edge the Burnt Wood, from which the Sanatorium took its name, was purchased in 1918. Building began in 1921 to plans by H Beswick, County Architect for Cheshire County Council and the Sanatorium opened 6 November 1923. Plans for developments from the 1930s onwards were drawn up by Wood, Goldstraw & Yorath of Tunstall. The Sanatorium closed on 1 November 1969, became derelict and was finally demolished in 1977. The site was purchased by Newcastle under Lyme Borough Council and developed as a private housing estate. A few of the original buildings were incorporated in the new estate.
The collection comprises a very full set of plans both of the site, the grounds, the hospital buildings and staff accommodation. The grounds plans include a tree planting scheme, and plans for the kitchen gardens and piggeries. The plans of the hospital include plans of chalets and cottages and there are plans and blueprints showing the specialist equipment required by a Tuberculosis Sanatorium.
