- Administrative History: Cannock Rural District Council was created in 1894 by the Local Government Act 1894. It succeeded Cannock Rural Sanitary Authority (Cannock Board of Guardians acting as) in 1894 (first meeting January 1895). Its area of jurisdiction consisted of Acton Trussell and Bednall, Blymhill (1934 - 74), Brewood, Bushbury (1894 - 1934), Cheslyn Hay, Coppenhall, Dunston, Essington, Featherstone, Hatherton, Hilton, Huntington, Kinvaston (1894 - 1934), Lapley, Penkridge, Saredon, Shareshill, Stretton, Teddesley Hay, Weston Under Lizard (1934 - 1947) and Great Wyrley. Cannock Rural District was abolished in March 1974 by the Local Government Act 1974 and, together with Seisdon Rural District Council, was succeeded by South Staffordshire District Council. As a public body the functions of Cannock Rural District Council were; sanitation; public health; town planning; education and housing. These functions were carried out by the following committees; Cheslyn Hay Water Committee [1901 - 1924]; Cheslyn Hay and Great Wyrley Sewerage Joint Committee; Extinction of Fires Joint Committee; Housing Committee; Rating and Valuation Committee and General Purposes Committee.

- Description: The records in this collection originate from the Clerk's Department and the Treasurer. There are good sets of Council and Committee minutes in the Clerk's section. The Treasurer's records comprise a good series of general accounts, rate books and rate assessment books, housing accounts, and one superannuation register.
