- Description: The later Quarter Sessions rolls were flattened and bound into their present form in 1928/29. Prior to this, they had been in somewhat chaotic disorder and although a considerable amount of sorting and re-arrangement was carried out during the 1920s, this earlier disorder may account for a lack of consistency in their re-arrangement. Recognisances and sacrament certificates are to be found with the original rolls and not always within the correct sessions.
Before 1760, the Rolls generally consist of examples of the following types of documents: writs, calendars, indictments and presentments, jury lists, petitions, information, examination and highway papers which are mostly presentments of highways in need of repair or certificates that highways have been repaired. Where other types of documents are included, these are indicated in the following list.
From 1696-1742, the Session Order Books often contain a list of papers filed in the rolls for a particular session under the heading "Filed on the Nomina Ministrorum" or "With Sessions Calendar".
After about 1760, the Rolls consist almost entirely of writs, grand jury lists, indictments and calendars of justices, coroners, constables and bailiffs.
[See note below about 1800 rolls.] - Related Material: Separate series of recognisances and sacrament certificates may be found under the reference Q/RRO and Q/SPR/1. Rolls for the four quarters of 1800 are to be found in the Hand Morgan & Owen solicitors' collection, with the references D1798/31/14.
